Oldtime Movies and Dead Actors
Dad always loved John Wayne. I remember dad watching him on television quite often. If it wasn't John Wayne it was Matt Dillon in gusmoke or Clint Eastwood in Rawhide. I know I'm telling my age, but hey these are good memories of my childhood that I'll always remember, and reflect on as I get older. It seems I've been doing alot of that here lately. I still hear the music of Gunsmoke every once in awhile, and I seem to always flash back to memories of dad, sitting in his recliner, watching television so intently. I still hear the whips cracking from Rawhide and the flame growing to consume the map of the Ponderosa as Lorne Green, Michael Landon, and Dan Blocker, ride up on there horses at the beginning of Bonanza. Dad never missed a new John Wayne movie when it was released to the theaters .
I remember going and seeing The Green Berets when it was first released. At the time the United States was at war, with Vietnam. As I remember it was pretty bloody. I also remember Dad watching Rooster Cogburn in True Grit. That was a really good movie. I liked the part where they were filming on the famous Rogue River in Oregon. There are some pretty treacherous waters where they were filming. Every movie star I've mentioned in this story is now dead, all except James Arnes who was the sheriff in Gunsmoke. There will never be old movies like yester year and there will never be actors like there use to be .
This reminds me of the old country singers they're all just about dead and gone. I can't help but think of George Jones song and ask the same question as he did a few years ago, and that question was, who's going to fill their shoes ?
