Aw yes, the fever, I remember it well. I was ten, or maybe eleven years old.
I remember Mom wrapping me in blankets because at first I had the chills. Then the fever came and stayed the afternoon with me. I remember mom lying me out on the kitchen table "stark ass naked," packing me in ice. Back then she was a nurse in Bakersfield's San Joaquin Hospital. She had a doctor friend she'd call for advice and finally he came over. After the fever subsided it was time to spread out the blankets again, it was just like another winters night, but, this time it was in the kitchen with me on the table. The fever was known as "Scarlet Fever". Funny, I'm married to a woman named "Scarlet," she was a young red headed beauty and she had a fever, a fever that was as strong as the Scarlet Fever I had when I was a kid. Yes, that's why I married her because of "Scarlet's Fever."
