Route 66 the summer of 65

finally finished loading the luggage into the car for Dad. He told everybody to get in the car, as we were ready to head out for vacation. This was the start of his two-week vacation he earned every year. When we were close to reaching Arizona and New Mexico the trip began to get interesting. My mother loved to stop at the trading posts that were along the side of the road. There was usually an Indian or two sitting out in front of the store with some hand-made quilts they had made along with some turquoise jewelry. The trading posts were full of hand-made items, and they seemed to lure Mom right in off of Route 66! I don't blame her, though, I loved looking at the stuff too. The Native American Indians are very talented.

We never stayed overnight in a motel. Mom and Dad couldn't afford a motel with eight children, so they took turns driving while the other one would sleep. We would occasionally stop at a rest area so we could have a bite to eat. Mom would fix bologna or ham sandwiches and a few potato chips, and a can of cherry soda if we promised to go to the bathroom before we got back on the highway. Finally, after three days of driving, we would turn onto a dirt road that would lead us to Uncle Gale’s cabin. We were all excited because the long drive was now over, and the fun would soon begin.

As we pulled into the driveway, Aunt Ethel and Uncle Gale would come out of the cabin to greet us. We hadn't seen them since they drove out to California about two years ago. Mom and Dad were pretty tired from driving across the United States so Uncle Gale decided he would cook up some chicken while they rested. After dinner I wanted to see the boat, so Uncle Gale and I walked down to the dock just below the cabin. I wanted to go for a ride but that would have to wait until tomorrow. Uncle Gale unfolded a chair, sat down on the dock and started to smoke his pipe, which he had stuffed away in his shirt pocket. While we were walking back towards the cabin I noticed some little bugs that would light up when they were flying. It was the first time I had ever seen a lightning bug; they were really neat to watch. I chased them until it was too dark to chase them any longer.

The next morning I was awakened by the smell of eggs and bacon cooking on the stove. Mom and Aunt Ethel were in the kitchen; Dad and Uncle Gale were just out the side door in the carport. I asked them what they were doing, and if I could help. “You can help me when we are ready to carry these life jackets down to the boat,” said Uncle Gale. After breakfast we all went for a boat ride. There were thirteen people at the cabin and we all couldn't go at the same time, so the Moon kids went first and the adults went next.
We were at Uncle Gale’s and Aunt Ethel’s for several days. We all went to the Smokey Mountains and camped there for two nights. We also traveled to West Virginia to visit my mother’s family, and we visited family in Ohio. We visited the Grand Ole Opry. We saw some of the famous country music singers such as Johnny Cash, Loretta Lynn and Conway Twitty; singers silenced now, some due to age, and several of them have passed away. We always had great summer day vacations. This one happens to be my most memorable summer vacation. Summer Days of ‘65.
It took us three days to drive from California to Ohio You can imagine how many times we heard the million dollar question Are we there yet

This is very interesting and not the ending I had expected!!!!

(Note: This should be required reading for every household in America !)
A few years after I was born, my Dad met a stranger who was new to our small
Tex as town. From the beginning, Dad was fascinated with this enchanting
newcomer and soon invited him to live with our family. The stranger was
quickly accepted and was around from then on.

As I grew up, I never questioned his place in my family. In my young mind,he had a special niche. My parents were complementary instructors: Mom taught me good from evil, and Dad taught me to obey. But the stranger...he was our storyteller. He would keep us spellbound for hours on end with adventures, mysteries and comedies.

If I wanted to know anything about politics, history or science, he always
knew the answers about the past, understood the present and even seemed
able to predict the future! He took my family to the first major league ball
game. He made me laugh, and he made me cry. The stranger never stopped
talking, but Dad didn't seem to mind.

Sometimes, Mom would get up quietly while the rest of us were shushing
each other to listen to what he had to say, and she would go to the kitchen
for peace and quiet. (I wonder now if she ever prayed for the stranger to leave.)

Dad ruled our household with certain moral convictions, but the stranger
never felt obligated to honor them. Profanity, for example, was not allo wed
in our home... Not from us, our friends or any visitors. Our longtime
visitor, however, got away with four-letter words that burned my ears and
made my dad squirm and my mother blush. My Dad didn't permit the
liberal use of alcohol. But the stranger encouraged us to try it on a regular
basis.

He made cigarettes look cool, cigars manly and pipes distinguished.
He talked freely (much too freely!) about sex. His comments were sometimes
blatant, sometimes suggestive, and generally embarrassing.

I now know that my early concepts about relationships were influenced
strongly by the stranger. Tim e after time, he opposed the values of my
parents, yet he was seldom rebuked... And NEVER asked to leave.

More than fifty years have passed since the stranger moved in with our
family. He has blended right in and is not nearly as fascinating as he was
at firs t. Still, if you could walk into my parents' den today, you would
still find him sitting over in his corner, waiting for someone to listen to
him talk and watch him draw his pictures.

His name?.... . . .
We just call him "TV."
He has a wife now....We call her "Computer."

The water was very cold. We had been playing most of the evening, before sunset, in and out of the water, just having a grand old time. We had a bon fire and cooked some hotdogs on sqewers. We even broke out the marsmallows and had a few of them. The frogs were sounding off with their croaks and the crickets were creating their racket, it's just part of nature, but, it also makes for a fun experience when we think of oldtime memories. Sheila was running close to the edge of the lake unaware of the roots that protruded out of the ground causing a hazard to tripping. She fell into the lake and started splashing around trying to get out of the slippery mud around the edge of the lake. Her uncle noticed the trouble she was having getting out of the lake, he bend down in the darkness, he touched her arm and said grab hold of my arm Sheila and I'll help you out. Scared, excited, and cold, she grabbed hold of her uncle's arm and he pulled her to safety.

1 And after these things I saw four angels standing on the four corners of the earth, holding the four winds of the earth, that the wind should not blow on the earth, nor on the sea, nor on any tree.

2 And I saw another angel ascending from the east, having the seal of the living God: and he cried with a loud voice to the four angels, to whom it was given to hurt the earth and the sea,

3 Saying, hurt not the earth, neither the sea, nor the trees, till we have sealed the servants of our God in their foreheads.

4 And I heard the number of them which were sealed: and there were sealed an hundred and forty and four thousand of all the tribes of the children of Israel.

5 Of the tribe of Juda were sealed twelve thousand. Of the tribe of Reuben were sealed twelve thousand. Of the tribe of Gad were sealed twelve thousand.

6 Of the tribe of Aser were sealed twelve thousand. Of the tribe of Nepthalim were sealed twelve thousand. Of the tribe of Manasses were sealed twelve thousand.

7 Of the tribe of Simeon were sealed twelve thousand. Of the tribe of Levi were sealed twelve thousand. Of the tribe of Issachar were sealed twelve thousand.

8 Of the tribe of Zabulon were sealed twelve thousand. Of the tribe of Joseph were sealed twelve thousand. Of the tribe of Benjamin were sealed twelve thousand.

9 After this I beheld, and, lo, a great multitude, which no man could number, of all nations, and kindreds, and people, and tongues, stood before the throne, and before the Lamb, clothed with white robes, and palms in their hands;

10 And cried with a loud voice, saying, Salvation to our God which sitteth upon the throne, and unto the Lamb.

11 And all the angels stood round about the throne, and about the elders and the four beasts, and fell before the throne on their faces, and worshipped God,

12 Saying, Amen: Blessing, and glory, and wisdom, and thanksgiving, and honour, and power, and might, be unto our God for ever and ever. Amen.

13 And one of the elders answered, saying unto me, What are these which are arrayed in white robes? and whence came they?

14 And I said unto him, Sir, thou knowest. And he said to me, These are they which came out of great btribulation, and have washed their robes, and made them white in the eblood of the Lamb.

15 Therefore are they before the throne of God, and serve him day and night in his temple: and he that sitteth on the throne shall dwell among them.

16 They shall hunger no more, neither thirst any more; neither shall the sun light on them, nor any heat.

17 For the Lamb which is in the midst of the throne shall feed them, and shall lead them unto living fountains of waters: and God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes.

Satan finally chained and Heavenly Father finally putting a stop to all tears death will be no more this, my friends, will be the greatest show on earth.

Memories Of Christmas #32

I remember Christmas with my brothers and sisters. There were eight of us, four boys and four girls. Christmas was a very special time of year. I loved the Christmas songs, Bing Crosby records playing on the stereo, Burl Ives on the television singing “Frosty The Snowman.”

Mom was busy in the kitchen. My sister, Shirley, usually helped her with the cooking or with wrapping presents. Mom was always good at cooking. She would make pumpkin pie along with the dreaded fruitcake. We never went without a turkey for our Christmas dinner. I remember one Christmas we had duck and turkey.

Dad and I usually put up the Christmas lights and my brother Robert liked to help with them. Sometimes we’d go all out and set up the yard really nice. The part I hated was untangling the lights. Dad liked to turn the lights on at dusk. He'd drive us around Santa Ana to see all the houses decorated with lights. At times Mom stayed home so she could get some of the presents wrapped while the children were out of the house. We were always looking for a misplaced present that hadn’t yet been wrapped.

Grandma and Red (our step-Grandpa) would celebrate Christmas with us. They’d pull into the driveway, of course by this time all of us would be excited. Christmas Eve is here and it’s the night we all go crazy. Christmas wrappings and bows strewn throughout the house, Elvis Presley singing “Blue Christmas,” electric cars zipping down the hall and crashing, sisters excited to check out their new Mary Poppins dolls. The house was a wreck for the next couple of days. We would have Christmas dinner on Christmas day, later that evening we'd go for a drive so Mom could see the lights she had missed while wrapping presents.

Christmas was a special time at the Moon family’s house. I think of them every year and miss those years, especially the years when I was a child. I often think back to the wonderful times we had when all of us were but only kids, back in the year of 1966

Luke 2:12 And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger.

Carry On Tuesday

I remember when I met my first wife, Louise. I found it very odd that she had never been anywhere in the world other than Bakersfield, California. My brothers and sisters and I, eight altogether, were lucky when we were kids. Our mother and father took us everywhere. I, having been all over the United States, even deep into the country of Mexico, found it very strange that she had never been out of Bakersfield. I had been through every state of the Union except Hawaii. I've been to the Grand Ole O pry twice, every national park you can think of, Disneyland, Disney World, Magic Mountain, Knots Berry Farm, etcetera, etcetera.

When I found out she had never been to the beach and had never seen the ocean ever before in her life, I had to take her there. My mother and father owned an apartment just a block or two from the beach. I took her with me to Pis mo Beach, California to let her see the ocean for the very first time in her life. Louise and I walked to the beach every day, she simply loved it. She grew excited and loved the weekend we had together.

Soon, right after we were married, I decided she needed to see the Painted Desert, so we went to Arizona to look at a couple of jobs my father and I were going to be doing there in Arizona. I took my wife with me, she loved Phoenix,Tucson, and the Painted Desert, she loved Arizona.

She had never seen it snow before. Since Dad and I had a couple of jobs coming up in Denver, Colorado, we took her with us. We lived in Denver for just about a year. She was like a little kid when it snowed, she loved to play in it and loved driving in it also.

Louise was full of life and loved the outdoors. She had never been to a drive in movie theater. There were several things that she just never got to do when she was a child or even a teenage girl. As a child her family life wasn't a good life at all. Her father was an alcoholic and her mother was a drug addict and left the home when she was a young child. She grew up pretty much on her own with nobody watching over her.

My father loved to tease Louise because she was pretty gullible at times, she'd believe anything Dad told her. When we first got to Denver he said too her, “Louise, you must always remember to never eat the yellow snow.” She didn't understand why he said that until one day we were standing outside looking at the beautiful scenery around the house and out across the countryside it, was a very beautiful place where we all lived. One of the dogs decided to pee just a few feet in front of her it turned the snow yellow, of course she busted a gut laughing when she saw the yellow snow, she looked at me and said, “Now I know what Dad meant.”

Louise and I were married for several years. She loved traveling and visiting new places. This has become a regular thing for her to do. To this day, she is always traveling to some place she has never been before or back to a place that she has become very fond of. So I guess I would say to her "My hands open the curtains of your being."

                For  Clare

I wrote your name in the sky but the wind blew it away
Doesn't matter, for all I care I'll rewrite it again someday.
I kissed your lips, as I left today.  Doesn't matter, for all
I care I'll kiss em again someday.

I held your hand as we walked today, with it being cold
you tucked them away.  Doesn't matter, for all I care I'll get to
hold em again someday.

I proposed to you today, your eyes became wet then you walked away.
Doesn't matter, for all I care I'll propose to you again someday.
