For My Wife
Brenda, a sister younger than I, found a replica of this phrase at a yard sale. It sat on her piano in the living room. I fell in love with it so she gave it to me. Now that I'm getting older and, yes, wiser I can appreciate what the real meaning behind this phrase is. When a man is young he may say things that aren't quite right in the way he talks to his mate, more or less demanding things from her, like “get me a beer” or “get me my dinner” as soon as he gets home, or even “why isn't the house clean? What have you been doing all day, watching soap operas.” When you have enough battles over the years because you weren't patient or polite when you were younger, you finally learn to say please, thank you, or could you, please, or would you please instead of demanding what you want Besides, when the good Lord put you two together he didn't say it was up to the woman to be your maid, he put you together to make you a compliment to each other. Each should do for the other and be considerate of each other. When you realize this the saying, “Grow old along with me! The best is yet to be,” has more meaning.
