From Happiness to Sorrow
We finally got dad home from the hospital June 8th sorry it's been so long since I've given an update on Dad. He was doing really well while he was in the hospital. But it seems he has become weaker and unable to do as much as he was doing in the hospital. Dad has become very discouraged with his progress. I understand that he wants to walk again but he is wanting it to happen sooner than possible. The Physical Therapist has never told him he won't walk again but I've noticed that they haven't told him that he will walk again either they tell him that walking again is a goal and only a goal as they see it right now.
When He first broke his neck he wasn't able to feel his legs or arms. He couldn't feel his hands or even use his hands but that has now changed. I see the walking thing taking a little longer possibly in several months to maybe even a year from now. One of the exercises that he does every morning is standing up on his own lifting his legs as if he's marching he does this several times a day. I also take him outside on the porch and help him lift himself up by using the arms of his wheel chair. The physical Therapist has three different containers of silly putty each a different color standing for a different strength .
He uses the silly putty a couple of times a day to build the strength up in his fingers, hands, and wrists. It seems that it works pretty good. Over all his condition is coming around just a little slower than he wants it to be. I knew that I would be living with Dad for awhile but I didn't know it was going to be as long as it looks like it's going to be. That really bothers me because now all of my association and gatherings with friends have basically come to an end. I've always been the kind of guy who don't like to sit around the house doing nothing but it looks as if I'm going to have to get use to it.

The most positive thing of course is that your father is improving...it may be a long hard slog, but it's progress nonetheless.
You're a good man to be there for him in such a way to help him as much as possible. Especially at the cost of your own usual social gatherings etc...that's very selfless of you Larry and shows the strength of your love for Dad.
